In November 19th we celebrated 300th anniversary of birth of the first Russian academician, our greatest scientist and just genius, Mikhail Vasilievich Lomonosov.
He was born in the village "Denisovka" (or Mishaninskaya) near Kholmogory, Arkhangelsk region, in the pomor en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomors
Having an incredible craving for knowledge, he left his home at the age of 19 and went to Moscow, where joined the Slavic Greek Latin Academy (1731).
Later he studied at St.Petersburg Russian Imperial Academy of Sciences (since 1735) and the University of Marburg (1736-1741).
The first Russian scientist - naturalist; physicist, chemist, astronomer, encyclopedist, geographer, geologist, metallurgist, mosaicist, historian, artist, poet... and it's not the complete list...
So huge amount of skills is just amazing! He is real genius, who outran the century he lived, and even more, understanding mysteries of nature with power of his mind, with imagination!
In his the most favourite for me poem "Morning thoughts of God's greatness" (1743) he describes the Sun as "eternally burning ocean" and talks about "flaming whirls", i.e. he imagined and described things that became visible for scientists only about 150 years later...
What makes Lomonosov even more respected - is his love to our motherland, I mean, to the whole Russia and its citizens.
The main dream of the whole life of Lomonosov is to see somewhen Russia educated, peaceful and caring for safeguarding and augment of its nation.
The value of his contribution to Russian science, literature and history is impossible to be overrated.
One of his projects - The Moscow State University www.msu.ru/
named after Lomonosov in 1940.
I can't pretend to provide enough of information about such great figure here... just wanted to pay a tribute.
